Quai des Orfèvres, Hôtel de Police
Here I am again with some shots taken near Île de la Cité in Paris, which definitely is my favourite place in the city to have a morning walk.
Even though the sun takes more time to rise at this time of the year, I was lucky enough to enjoy a wonderful sunrise last Sunday, with almost none in the streets nor on the banks of the Seine river, and, above all, no riverboat sailing down the river, which is the nightmare of every photographer who wants to shoot reflections in rivers.
Taking advantage of these ideal but rare conditions, I’ve been able to enjoy this sunrise to its fullest, and take all the shots I wanted to take, which is quite unusual for me.
Indeed, contrary to what you could think, catching reflections in the early morning is not an easy job. First, you’ve got to get up early, before sunrise, if you want the river to be calm enough to perfectly reflect the environment in which it flows. Second, you’ve got to be lucky enough to have a “kind” weather, i.e. not too cloudy, which is not always the case, even though the weather forecast said the contrary. Then, when on place, you’ve got to hope there’s nothing unexpected, such as public works, or a drunk man sleeping in the middle of the place you want to take a picture of, which will definitely won’t let you take the picture you want so much. And then, you’ve got to be alert enough not to miss the 5-minute moment when the clouds in the sky take on pink shades, and be careful to use the right settings with your camera (one common mistake is to forget to set the ISO at 100 when on tripod), and not to overexpose nor underexpose your picture, because even though Lightroom is a nice tool, you know, from experience, that it won’t fix everything, especially those shots taken in bright sunlight. And then, you’ve got to run fast enough if you want to take several shots of several places in this 5-minute span of time for which you’ve woken up so early.
However, in the end, if you’ve managed to do all that, you might end up having some shots you’ll be quite happy with, and on the way back home, you will then realise that after all, even if it’s just starting, this day is a good day.
