Puddle Photography in Lyon, France

When puddle photography leads you to discover your own city with a whole new look.

If you were to ask me what place I love shooting the most in France, I wouldn’t hesitate a single second : in my opinion, Lyon is the most photogenic city in France, and the place where I’ve had fun taking pictures the most.

Surprisingly, though, I had never taken the time to do the kind of photography I like the most in Lyon, i.e. puddle photography. To be fair, with two large rivers running through it, there are already so many opportunities to catch great shots of iconic monuments reflecting in the water that I had never felt I needed to find puddles to get some nice reflection shots.

However, it sometimes happens that the Saône and the Rhône rivers are not calm enough to mirror their colourful banks. This was the case last week, as the Saône river was in spate, carrying along mud and even dead trunks. It had rained a lot during the previous days, and the river was to rough to give nice and clean reflections.

Consequently, I’ve had to innovate a bit, and since it had rained the previous night, I thought it might be the best opportunity to practice puddle photography in Lyon at last. As always, it is quite fun, since the aim was to find any street that had some puddle in the way and try to get a shot I liked. I discovered new streets, and developed a whole new look on a city I consider my home.

I ended my quest for puddle photos with three photos I like a lot, and I’m pretty sure I will try to find other puddles to photograph the next time I come to Lyon. I want to make a series with this theme.

I hope you’ll like those first three shots of a series that I hope will be prolific !

All shots were made with a A7II and a Sony FE28f2.0, a pretty great setup if you want my opinion.

    1. I very much encourage you to do so ! Even though Paris is wonderful and a city you cannot not visit in France, Lyon really is a place that’s worth a visit (at least 4 days, IMO). And there’s a lot of other places to visit (that I need to go to and come back from with photos) : Burgundy (Autun, Dijon, Tonnerre, Fontenay), Loire, Brittany, Dordogne…

That’s what’s nice with the world we live in : there’s so much to see that I wonder if anyone could see it all in a lifetime.

      1. One of the tragedies of being human is that it’s impossible to see it all in a lifetime — or even in 10, I suspect. That’s why I feel fortunate to live in an age when I can at least see these places vicariously through your photos, Pierre. I always enjoy your posts no matter the place or the subject!
