Rouen under the rain

Rouen is a beautiful place to visit, and photograph. But it’s a much nicer city to visit when it’s sunny and when your significant other is with you.

When I first visited Rouen some months ago with my partner in life, we both were amazed by the rich architecture of the city and the character of its old medieval streets lined with colourful half-timbered houses to typical of the Normandy region. And when we left the city, we were seriously wondering about how life would be for the both of us if we could find land a job there. To sum it up quite simply : Rouen was so nice that for the first time, I realised I may not want to leave Paris for Lyon so fast, judging by the beautiful places I could find so close to the capital city of France.

Since I like photography a lot, and especially puddle photography these days, I made the plan to come back to Rouen when it would rain so that I could take some pictures of the cities with reflections of its major monuments and picturesque districts in puddles.

Unfortunately, it was a bit hot that day, and it had not rained as much as the weather forecast had said on the news. So no big puddle, but just some that were not that easy to take advantage of. But still, I could take some pictures.

When there, I also realised how much Rouen is a much more agreeable city on a sunny day, with the right person next to you : the first time I went there, I was in love with the city, also because I was enjoying this moment so much that it made me love my partner even more. When I visited it alone, the magic wasn’t there anymore : I had already visited all the impressive churches of the city, and I couldn’t enjoy the food, the numerous tea shops, all in all, the life of the city, without my loved one next to me. It’s like going to a restaurant alone : the food is the same, but it’s not as tasty as when shared.

This makes me think that I have changed quite a lot : I used to enjoy taking pictures alone, but the more I take pictures, the more I’d like to share it on the moment also. I used to want to get out just for the sake of photography, and now, I want to do photography just for the sake of sharing moments. Ah ! Silly me I think. It must be hard to understand me I guess.

Anyway, Rouen is still a beautiful place to visit, and photograph. But it’s a much nicer city to visit when it’s sunny and when your significant other is with you.

  1. I get exactly what you mean. I’ve been in Europe for nine weeks now, away from my significant other. I’ve had some wonderful experiences with wonderful people, but somehow it can feel empty without that special someone to share it with. Love the photos, as always! Didn’t get to visit Normandy this summer, but definitely will get there sometime soon.
